"When We Were Trekkies #5: The Expanding Universe" by Joe Sikoryak
A continuing graphic memoir of five cosplayers in the early fan scene of the Seventies.
After scoring a paid gig as Apes, the boys race to complete their first “professional” costumes in time for the Christmas season. Performing for a crowd of civilians takes them out of their comfort zone and challenges them in many ways. Jonny tries to patch up his faltering friendship with Harold, in hopes to draw him back into the group for not one but two upcoming Star Trek Conventions!
When We Were Trekkies is created by Joe Sikoryak, who attended the first Star Trek, Famous Monsters and Comic Art conventions and lived to tell the tale. His memoir of fanboys at the dawn of conventions blends awkward adolescence, nerdish spectacle and a generous spirit of adventure. While certain details are fictionalized, the costumes, festivities and unbridled passions are completely authentic.
