"Nearly Miss" by Cristina Portolano

Like flipping through a photo album, Nearly Miss illustrates author Cristina Portolano’s childhood through a series of quirky snapshots of earthquakes, itchy dresses, and slightly sadistic nuns in Naples at the end of the 1980’s.

Strong-willed and inquisitive, Cristina copes with traditional gender expectations and the anticipation of “becoming a miss” through intense friendships (whether real or imaginary) with Barbie™ and soccer superstar Diego Armando Maradona. Holding a firm balance between relatable domestic drama and intriguing international turmoil, Nearly Miss is a hilariously accurate portrait of the cruelty and challenges of growing up, and a piercing depiction of a universal family dynamic.
